Dr. Keisha Downey was born and raised in North Chicago, Illinois in an environment she feels contributed to who she is today. Growing up in a single parent household and living in a city that some consider underprivileged set the stage for what she wanted to pursue. Dr. Downey decided to dedicate her life to improving mental health conditions among couples and families. “I wanted to help people work through challenges for the betterment of themselves based on my knowledge and experience…Basically, help to prevent others from making some of the same mistakes I had,” she shares.

Dr. Downey took her calling very seriously, allowing her to develop an impressive body of work, and she still has many groundbreaking achievements ahead! As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Dr. Downey has a private practice in Beverly Hills, provides psychotherapy and psychological services for the Department of Mental Health, is part owner of an Entertainment Consulting Business: Lyndon, Lyndsey, LaRoi, and has been a Resident Counselor on four of the six seasons of VH1’s Couple’s Therapy with Dr. Jenn.
Working on the show has given me the opportunity to work alongside knowledgeable and supportive therapists, which has helped me to better understand what it takes to be a great and ethical clinician.

Dr. Downey’s journey has not been a smooth one, but it has definitely been rewarding. After years of believing in herself, she became the first in her family to earn a degree on the doctorate level. Through this journey she was able to discover her true passion for helping people: “It’s rewarding to see my clients’ progress. Many people suffer from a mental illness. I get to use my education, training, and personal experiences to help make a positive difference in their lives.” Dr. Downey’s next goal is to broaden her influence by writing books to educate the world on the importance of mental health. Ultimately, she plans to make a significant positive impact within the marriage and family realm. Her accomplishments and genuine will to make a difference are truly admirable, and following her journey has been quite exciting!
